A Beautiful Trap at the WSXA Awards in Berlin
I’m back from Berlin, and I’m still thinking about the evening I spent at the WSXA awards with A Beautiful Trap.
The film had been selected as a Staff Pick Winner, and travelling to Berlin to celebrate that recognition in person made it feel real in a new way. A project that began as a small visual experiment had brought me into a cinema full of filmmakers, each with a different story to tell.
The event took place at City Kino Wedding, an independent cinema that felt like the right setting for a gathering of creative people. The evening was beautifully organised, but what stayed with me most was its atmosphere. There was excitement around the films, genuine interest in one another’s work and a warmth that made it easy to talk and connect.
Berlin added something to the experience, too. I felt surrounded by a city with room for different artistic voices and ways of making films. Being there with an experimental AI short made me feel encouraged to keep exploring my own approach to storytelling.
A Beautiful Trap looks at the space between escape and entrapment: how something we turn to for relief can quietly begin to hold us in place. Sharing that work in this setting, and meeting other filmmakers along the way, meant a great deal to me.
